ChatGPT vs Claude: I Pay for Both, Claude Does the Work

Two subscriptions on my card, and only Claude gets the work that actually matters.

The short answer

Claude, and for the work I care about it isn't close. I'm on Claude Max at $100 a month, and Claude Code runs my websites and my marketing work. I still pay for ChatGPT, but it's the side tool for quick questions and images, not the one I build with.

I pay for both. Only one of them does my actual work. Claude Max costs me $100 a month, and it's the window that's open when a site needs changing, a draft needs writing, or a research question needs more than one search. ChatGPT is still on my card too. It just doesn't get the hard stuff anymore.

Why I Pay for Both

Because they don't do the same job for me. Claude handles anything long or multi-step. ChatGPT handles fast one-off questions, images, and a kind of market research I can't get anywhere else.

Most "which one is better" posts assume you'll pick one and cancel the other. That's a fine plan if you want a single $20 bill. It isn't how I use them.

I dictate most of my prompts with Wispr Flow, which means I have an unusually honest record of where my attention goes. Over the last 90 days, about 62 percent of everything I dictated, around 5,471 prompts, went into Claude Code or another AI chat window. The heavy work in that pile is Claude's. ChatGPT gets the quick stuff, and I keep paying for it for reasons that have more to do with my job than with the product.

Pricing, Side by Side

Both start free and both charge $20 for the standard paid plan. The differences are at the edges. ChatGPT has an $8 tier that Claude doesn't match, and both top out at $100 or $200 a month, though OpenAI paused new sign-ups for its $200 tier on September 10, 2026.

Here's what each plan costs and gets you, pulled from both pricing pages on September 28, 2026.

Tier Claude ChatGPT
Free $0. Chat, memory, voice, connectors, up to 5 projects, no Claude Code $0. Limited image generation, voice, memory, and Codex
Budget No budget tier Go, $8 a month, may include ads
Standard Pro, $20 a month or $17 billed annually, Claude Code included Plus, $20 a month, ad-free, expanded Codex
Heavy use Max 5x, $100 a month, monthly billing only Pro, $100 a month, 5x the usage of Plus
Heaviest use Max 20x, $200 a month Pro, $200 a month, new sign-ups paused since Sept 10, 2026
Ads None on any plan Possible on Free and Go, none on Plus or Pro

Claude Code Is Most of the Argument

Claude Code is an agent that reads a whole project, edits the files, and runs the commands. It's included on Pro and Max, it runs in the terminal and a desktop app, and it's the part of Claude that runs my websites.

Anthropic's Claude Code docs describe it as a tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and works in the terminal, IDEs, a desktop app, and the browser. In practice I describe the change and it makes it, across however many files the change touches.

Per-project instructions are the quiet half. Each project carries a file of rules that Claude Code reads at the start of every session, so my style rules, banned words, and deploy rules never need repeating. The Claude chat app does a version of the same thing with Projects, which hold their own instructions and files.

To be fair, ChatGPT has projects and memory on every plan, and its own coding agent, Codex, shows up in limited form even on Free. That's a real point for ChatGPT on price. Claude is simply where I built my rules, and Claude Code is the agent I trust with a whole repo. I get into how it compares with other coding tools in Claude Code vs Cursor.

I describe the change and it makes it, across however many files the change touches.

Writing and Long Documents

Claude's drafts need less cleanup before they sound like a person wrote them. That's my experience, not a benchmark, and it's the second reason Claude gets the real work.

Every AI draft needs an editing pass. What changes between tools is how long that pass takes, and with Claude it's shorter. That's the whole claim.

Long documents land in the same place. When I hand Claude a long brief, a transcript, or a pile of notes and ask for something built on top of it, it keeps the thread. Research that needs more than one search goes to Claude for the same reason.

Connectors Bring My Own Data In

Claude connects to outside tools through MCP, which is how my meeting notes, Search Console data, and analytics end up in the same conversation. Anthropic's help center says custom connectors work on every plan, with Free capped at one.

My meeting notes live in Granola, and Granola has an MCP server, so I can ask Claude about last week's calls without copying and pasting anything. I covered that setup in my Granola review. Search Console and analytics plug in the same way, so an answer about my traffic comes from my numbers, not a guess about what sites like mine usually see.

ChatGPT's pricing page lists apps that connect to internal tools on Plus and Pro. I haven't moved my data plumbing over there. It already works in Claude, and I don't want to build it twice.

Where ChatGPT Is Better

Images, voice, the cheap tier, and reach. ChatGPT generates images on every plan, adds voice with video from Go up, sells an $8 plan Claude doesn't match, and it's the AI most people already know by name.

  • Image generation. ChatGPT's pricing page lists it on every plan, limited on Free. Claude's pricing page doesn't list image generation at all. When I need an image, ChatGPT is the tab I open.
  • Voice. Both have voice mode. ChatGPT adds voice with video on Go, Plus, and Pro. I dictate into everything with Wispr, so I don't lean on either one's voice mode, but if talking to your AI out loud is the point, ChatGPT offers more of it.
  • The cheap tier. Go is $8 a month. Claude goes straight from free to $20, or $17 a month if you pay for a year up front.
  • A coding agent on Free. Codex is on ChatGPT Free in limited form. Claude Code needs a paid plan.
  • Name recognition. When most people say "just ask AI," they mean ChatGPT. That matters if you're sharing chats or setting up tools for people who aren't going to learn a second app.

Why ChatGPT Stays on My Card

Quick questions, images, and my job. I work in marketing, ChatGPT is increasingly where people search, and I need to see what it tells them.

The quick-question use is simple. Some things don't need a project, a connector, or a long thread. I ask, I get the answer, I move on.

The work reason matters more. When someone asks a chatbot what to buy or who to hire, that answer is starting to do the job a search results page used to do, and I'd rather see it firsthand than read about it. OpenAI is also building an ads business on top of it. In January 2026 OpenAI said it would start testing ads in the U.S. on the Free and Go tiers, with Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise staying ad-free. If you work in marketing, that's a channel you're going to get asked about. You can't have a real opinion on a channel you never open.

The Full Comparison

Claude is the better tool for long, multi-step work that touches your own files and data. ChatGPT is the better all-rounder for quick answers, images, and voice.

What I Use Each One For

Anything long, multi-step, or tied to my own data goes to Claude. Anything quick, visual, or about what the public sees goes to ChatGPT.

Job Goes to Why
Changing my websites Claude Code Edits the whole project and follows my per-project rules
Writing drafts Claude Less cleanup before it sounds like a person
Multi-step research Claude Keeps the thread across long inputs
Questions about past meetings Claude with Granola MCP Reads my notes directly
Traffic and search questions Claude with connectors Answers from my own Search Console and analytics data
Quick one-off question ChatGPT Fast, no setup
Images ChatGPT Claude doesn't list image generation
What ChatGPT tells people ChatGPT It's increasingly where people search

Pick Claude If

  • You want an agent that edits whole projects, not just a chat window
  • You have rules you're tired of repeating in every chat
  • You write a lot and want less cleanup
  • You want your own data plugged in through MCP
  • You'd rather never see an ad in your chats

Pick ChatGPT If

  • You mostly ask quick questions
  • You generate images regularly
  • You want voice with video
  • You want a paid plan for $8
  • You need to see what the most-used chatbot tells people
Verdict, Claude
Claude does the work. ChatGPT keeps a seat.

If you can only pay for one, pay for Claude. Claude Code, per-project instructions, and connectors to your own data turn it into something that finishes the job instead of talking about it. I still pay for ChatGPT, because quick answers, images, and seeing what it tells people are worth it to me as a marketer. If you don't write, don't build anything, and mostly want images and quick answers, ChatGPT is the better buy, and Go at $8 is the cheapest way in.

Tested. Claude Max and ChatGPT, both paid, both in daily use. Prices checked September 28, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

For long, multi-step work, yes, in my experience. Claude Code, per-project instructions, and MCP connectors make Claude the one I build with. ChatGPT is better for image generation, voice with video, and quick one-off questions, which is why I still pay for it.

Should I pay for ChatGPT or Claude?

If you write, code, or run long projects, pay for Claude Pro at $20 a month, which includes Claude Code. If you mostly want quick answers and images, ChatGPT Plus at $20 or Go at $8 is the better buy. I pay for both, but Claude gets the real work.

How much does Claude cost compared to ChatGPT?

Both have free plans. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20 a month. Claude Max is $100 or $200 a month, and ChatGPT Pro is also $100 or $200 a month. ChatGPT Go is $8 a month and Claude has no equivalent. OpenAI paused new sign-ups for the $200 Pro tier on September 10, 2026.

Is Claude Code included with Claude Pro?

Yes. Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code as included on Pro and Max. It isn't included on the Free plan, and the Claude Code tab in the desktop app also needs a paid plan.

Can Claude generate images?

Claude's pricing page doesn't list image generation on any plan, while ChatGPT's lists it on every plan, limited on Free. If images are a big part of what you need, ChatGPT is the one to pay for. It's the main thing I still open ChatGPT for.

Does ChatGPT have ads?

On some plans. OpenAI said in January 2026 it would test ads in the U.S. on the Free and Go tiers, and ChatGPT's pricing page says Go may include ads. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise don't include ads. Anthropic has said Claude will remain ad-free.
